Visit each of the stations at the perimeter of the room. Answer the questions on the cards, or on the page linked above.
1.In this station, please arrange the lever arm and fulcrum so that the alien toy can lift the brick.
How did you have to arrange everything?
Compare the location of the alien toy and the brick, relative to the fulcrum.
Compare the final elevation of the brick to the original elevation of the alien.
2. In this station, arrange the "father" weight and the "son" weight so they balance.
How did you have to arrange everything?
Compare the location of the "father" weight and the "son" weight, relative to the fulcrum.
Compare the peak elevation of the "father" to the peak elevation of the "son".
3. In this station, raise the "obelisk" by pulling on each rubber band in turn.
How did it feel to pull from each location?
Compare the distance you pulled the lower band with the distance you pulled the upper band.
How to submit your work:
At one of the above stations, arrange a lever so that is balanced.
Take a picture of the lever using PhotoBooth. (We will use this picture to measure distances from the fulcrum, so choose a camera angle that gives you a good view of the distances on each side of the fulcrum.)
Drag the picture into an OmniGraffle document, lock it, and show the calculations for the moment on each side. (I'll show you how to do this in class tomorrow!)
